Fire-Protection Butterfly Valves: UL/FM Listing, Tamper Switches & NFPA 13

A fire-protection butterfly valve has one job nobody can see until it matters: stay open so water reaches the sprinklers, and prove it is open to the fire alarm panel every second. That is why a sprinkler control valve is not just any butterfly valve — it must be UL Listed and FM Approved, rated for 175 or 300 psi, and fitted with a supervisory (tamper) switch that signals the instant someone starts to close it. This guide explains what UL/FM listing and NFPA 13 supervision actually require, how the tamper switch works, the difference between grooved and wafer fire valves, and a selection flow so the riser valve you specify passes inspection the first time.
UL/FM listing and NFPA supervision — what they require
UL Listing and FM Approval are independent third-party certifications that the valve has been tested and proven fit for fire-protection service — for flow capacity, pressure rating, durability and the reliability of its tamper switch. An ordinary industrial butterfly valve, however good, cannot be used as a sprinkler control valve unless it carries these marks; the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) will reject it at inspection. On top of the listing, NFPA 13 requires every control valve to be supervised in the open position — in practice an electrical tamper switch wired back to the fire alarm control panel so any unauthorised closure raises a supervisory signal. The valve itself, its pressure rating and its supervision device all have to align with the system design.
How the supervisory (tamper) switch works

1. Valve held fully open
In normal service the disc is fully open and the tamper switch sits in its normal (closed-circuit) state, telling the panel the water path is clear.

2. Someone begins to close it
An operator turns the handwheel/gear. A cam or trip rod tied to the stem tracks the disc position as it leaves the fully-open stop.

3. Switch trips at ~20% off open
When the disc has moved roughly the first 20% of its travel away from open, the switch changes state and breaks/makes the supervisory circuit.

4. Panel raises a supervisory signal
The fire alarm control panel registers a supervisory (not alarm) condition, alerting staff that a control valve is no longer fully open — before a fire ever finds the closed valve.

Grooved-end fire valve
- Connects to roll/cut-grooved pipe with a coupling — fast install
- Standard riser configuration; valve stays in place for repairs
- Inherent vibration damping, good for pump rooms and risers

Wafer fire valve
- Clamped between flanges — smaller body, lower cost
- Good where there are already flanged connections and tight space
- Not for dead-end; needs downstream flange to stay clamped

1. Confirm the listing the AHJ accepts
Most jurisdictions require UL Listed and/or FM Approved. Check which marks the AHJ and the project specification call for before anything else — an unlisted valve fails on sight.

2. Match the pressure rating
Confirm the working pressure: many sprinkler systems are 175 psi, but high-rise standpipes and pumped systems often require 300 psi. Specify the valve rated for the highest pressure the riser will see.

3. Specify integral supervision
Order the valve with a factory-integrated tamper switch (one or two SPDT contacts) rather than relying on a field clamp-on, so supervision is reliable and wiring is clean. Confirm the contact form the alarm panel needs.

4. Choose grooved or wafer
Grooved is the default for risers and pump rooms — fast to install, easy to service, vibration-tolerant. Wafer suits a flanged section where space and cost are tight. Pick by the existing pipe connection method and the maintenance plan.

Fire water is usually treated/standing water, so EPDM seats and an epoxy-coated ductile-iron body are standard. If the system ties into potable supply, confirm NSF/ANSI 61 wetted-material certification too.


Frequently asked questions
What does a tamper switch on a fire butterfly valve do?
A tamper (supervisory) switch monitors the valve's position and signals the fire alarm panel the moment the valve is moved off fully open — typically once the disc has travelled about 20% of its range. This is required by NFPA 13 because a sprinkler control valve that has been closed, even accidentally, leaves part of the building unprotected. The switch turns a silent, invisible failure into an immediate supervisory alert so staff can re-open the valve before a fire ever finds it shut. It does not trigger the fire alarm itself — supervisory and alarm are separate states on the panel.
What is the difference between UL Listed and FM Approved?
Both are independent certifications that a product meets fire-protection standards, but they are issued by two different bodies with their own test protocols. UL (Underwriters Laboratories) Listing is the most widely required mark across North America; FM (FM Global) Approval is an insurer-driven standard often demanded on insured commercial and industrial properties. Many fire butterfly valves carry both. Which one (or both) you need is set by the AHJ and the project insurer, not by you — so confirm the required marks during specification and order a valve that carries them, rather than assuming one covers the other.
Can a fire-protection butterfly valve be used to throttle or balance flow?
No — a sprinkler control valve must be either fully open or, briefly during maintenance, fully closed. It is a supervised isolation valve, not a throttling valve, and NFPA requires it to be kept open at all times in service. Throttling it would partially starve the sprinklers, reduce available water and defeat the entire point of supervision. If a fire-water network genuinely needs flow regulation (for example, a pump test header or a pressure-reducing point), that is a separate, purpose-built listed device — not the riser control valve. Keep the control valve open and supervised, and never use it to balance flow.
Should I choose a grooved or wafer valve for a fire sprinkler riser?
For the main riser, grooved-end is usually the better choice. It bolts onto roll- or cut-grooved pipe with a coupling, which is far faster to install than flanges, tolerates the vibration of a fire-pump room, and lets you remove downstream pipe for service while the valve stays put. Wafer valves are common where the riser is already flanged or space is very tight, because they have a smaller body and lower cost — but they cannot serve a dead-end and rely on the downstream flange to stay clamped. In both cases the valve must be UL/FM listed, correctly pressure-rated and fitted with an integral tamper switch; the body style is a connection and maintenance decision, not a compliance one.
