Wafer Butterfly Valve Manufacturer — DN 40 to DN 1200

A wafer butterfly valve is the lightest, most compact way to put a quarter-turn shutoff between two pipe flanges. The body has no lugs or bolt holes — it is sandwiched between the upstream and downstream flanges using through-bolts, which keeps weight and face-to-face dimension down. LAUX has manufactured wafer butterfly valves to EN 593, API 609 Category A and ISO 5752 short-pattern face-to-face since 2011, with full in-house casting, CNC machining, vulcanisation and pressure testing. DN 40 to DN 1200, PN 10 / PN 16 / Class 150 / 10K, with EPDM, NBR, FKM/Viton or PTFE seats, and ductile-iron / WCB / CF8 / CF8M / CF3M / Aluminium-bronze bodies. Every valve is shell-tested to 150 % and seat-tested to 110 % of rated pressure, with a 24-month warranty and certificates of conformity supplied with shipment.

What is a wafer butterfly valve?

Geometrically, a wafer valve is a flat, disc-shaped body without flanges of its own. Four locating holes (or sometimes none, just two centering pins) keep the body aligned to the bolt circle. Operators install the valve by slipping it between two existing pipe flanges and pulling them together with through-bolts; the gasket function is performed by the elastomer seat itself, which extends slightly beyond the body face on both sides. Compared to lug or double-flange designs, the wafer body is roughly 30–50 % lighter and 10–25 % shorter face-to-face. This makes wafer the default choice when weight, space and bolting cost matter — for example HVAC chilled-water plant rooms, fire-protection risers, and any application where the pipeline does not need to be disassembled downstream of the valve.

Specifications

Standard ranges below cover ≈ 90 % of catalogue orders. We also produce non-standard wafer valves on request — write to sales for DN > 1200, special body materials, or non-elastomer seats.

Key features

  • Bubble-tight bidirectional shutoff against rated pressure — every valve seat-tested to 110 %.
  • ISO 5211 direct-mount stem so the same valve accepts manual lever, gearbox, pneumatic or electric actuators without an adapter.
  • PTFE stem bushings and FKM stem O-rings rated for 100 000 cycles in clean water service.
  • One-piece body — no flange leak paths, no studs between body halves.
  • Through-shaft with anti-blowout collar; meets API 609 fire-safe construction option.
  • Phenolic-backed or cartridge seat options; cartridge seat replaceable in the field with hand tools.
  • Spherically machined disc edge for low operating torque and extended seat life.
  • Epoxy-coated body (RAL 5005, 250 µm) for water-utility and outdoor service.

Applications

Wafer butterfly valves cover most general-service shutoff and throttling duties. The biggest end-markets we ship into:

Municipal water supply and treatment
Building HVAC chilled and hot-water systems
Fire protection — UL/FM grooved-end variants on request
Industrial cooling water and brine
Food and beverage CIP secondary lines (304 / 316 body)
Pulp & paper white-water and process lines
Sewage and treated effluent
OEM skids and packaged equipment

Wafer vs. lug vs. double-flange

Pick wafer when the pipeline downstream of the valve does not need to be removed. Pick lug when you need dead-end service or to disconnect downstream piping with the valve in place. Pick double flange for large bore (DN ≥ 600), high pressure, or buried-service.

Frequently asked questions

Can a wafer butterfly valve be used for dead-end service?
No — wafer bodies rely on both flanges being bolted to maintain seat compression. For dead-end service or downstream-removal duty choose a lug body of the same model.
What is the face-to-face dimension?
Per ISO 5752 short pattern (also covered by MSS SP-67 and API 609). e.g. 33 mm at DN 50, 46 mm at DN 100, 78 mm at DN 200, 102 mm at DN 300. Full table available on request.
Which seat material should I choose?
EPDM for clean water, hot water and most general HVAC (−20 °C…+120 °C). NBR for oil, fuel and air. FKM/Viton for chemicals and higher temperature (up to +200 °C). PTFE-lined body when the media attacks elastomers (acids, chlorinated solvents). When in doubt, send the medium, temperature and pressure to sales — we'll cross-check the chemical-compatibility chart for you.
Do you supply UL/FM-listed wafer valves for fire protection?
We supply UL/FM-listed grooved-end butterfly valves under a separate product line. For fire-protection mains where wafer geometry is mandated by the spec, write to sales for a project review.
What is the typical lead time?
Stock items (DI body, EPDM seat, lever or gear) ship in 7–14 days from order confirmation. Custom material (CF8M, duplex), large bore (DN ≥ 600), or special seat (PTFE, FKM) typically 25–45 days. We can split-ship if part of the order is stock.
Can you provide a project-specific certificate of conformity?
Yes. Every shipment includes shell- and seat-test reports, material certificates (EN 10204 3.1 by default, 3.2 with third-party witness on request) and, where applicable, CE / WRAS / NSF/ANSI 61 declarations. We can also issue project-specific reports against AWWA, EN 593 or API 609 acceptance criteria.
